Prospective fellows must be nominated by their faculty mentor. Graduate students who are interested in applying to the Stem Cell Biological Engineering Training Program are encouraged to discuss this with their mentors, as each faculty mentor may nominate only one fellowship candidate per year. Applications are available annually in early May, soon after students select their doctoral advisors, and are due in early June.
Nominees complete an application consisting of biographical information (post-secondary education, academic honors and service, publications), a personal statement, a description of the relevance of the proposed research to regenerative medicine, and a two-page research plan. Two letters of recommendation are also requested, one from the applicant’s mentor and from another person able to evaluate their potential to become a leader in academia or the biotechnology industry.
Applications are considered by a review panel of training program mentors during the month of June. Successful applicants may initiate their fellowship support on July 1, August 1 or September 1 of that same year. Initial appointments are for 12 months, and are renewable for an additional 12 months upon successful completion of the first year’s goals.
