Industry internships are an integral aspect of this program. Fellows conduct an internship in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company for a period of at least three months, as the culmination of their second year as trainees of this program. Internships are selected and arranged by the trainees during their second year of support, in consultation with their faculty mentors and the program directors.
The Bay Area is home to a very large number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including startups. Internships at these companies offer the attractive advantages that ongoing collaborations can be established beyond the internship period, and the internship may serve as a recruitment opportunity for fellows and their industry hosts alike. However, trainees may arrange internships at any location of their choosing.
